At the 44th Venice Biennale (1990), he represented the United Kingdom and was awarded the Duemilla Award. In 1991, he was awarded the Turner Prize. In 2011, he was awarded the Prince Takamatsu Memorial World Culture Prize. In 2013, he was knighted for his cultural contributions.
