Born in Kobe City in 1969. Currently based in Naha City, he is active all over the world.
Since the early 1990s, he has traveled to many places in Japan and abroad, creating performances, videos, sculptures, installations, etc. that explore the lives and culture of the places, the people who live there, and new forms of communication. His works sometimes also extend to the relationship between living things and humans. His style, which is full of poetry and humor but also metaphorically inspires people, has gained worldwide acclaim.
Major recent solo exhibitions include Museion: Bolzano Museum of Contemporary Art, Italy (2023), Wiels Center for Contemporary Art, Brussels, Belgium (2022), Musée National des Beaux-Arts, Monaco (2021), Creduc Contemporary Art Center, Ivry, France (2018), Kunst Halle Bern, Switzerland (2014), etc.
He has participated in many major international exhibitions, including the 57th Venice Biennale (2003 & 2017), the 14th Lyon Biennale (2017), the 12th Havana Biennale (2015), Examples include the 27th Sao Paulo Biennale (2006).
