Yayoi Kusama

Japan

Avant-garde artist, novelist. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. As a child, he experienced visual and auditory hallucinations and began creating paintings with motifs of mesh patterns and polka dots. In 1957, he moved to the United States and established himself as an avant-garde artist, showing a variety of works including net painting, soft sculpture, installations and happenings using mirrors and electric decorations. He discovers an artistic philosophy of self-annihilation through the compulsive repetition and multiplication of a single motif. The largest painting series, ``My Eternal Soul,'' started in 2009, has produced over 800 pieces in 12 years, and in 2021, the production of a new painting series ``Praying about Love Every Day'' is still ongoing. He continues his creative activities energetically. In 2016, he received the Order of Culture. He has held large-scale exhibitions at museums around the world, including Tate Modern, Center Pompidou, and M+.
